The curriculum taught at Michael Hall differs substantially from that of state schools and of other schools in the independent sector. Our aim is a school environment which is challenging and stimulating, but which also gives each child the space and security necessary for personal development. A pupil may attend Michael Hall from nursery class to university entrance, and there is no need for the often traumatic change of school in the adolescent years.
We do not regard school subjects as bodies of knowledge to be learnt, but as a means of offering each pupil the information and stimulation appropriate to each stage of growing up. While we place a great value on the development of intellectual skills, we are aware that intellectual attainments on their own are a poor measure of education. Research has begun to acknowledge that achievement depends as much on motivation and confidence as on intellectual capacity. Our curriculum is therefore not narrowly cerebral, but includes a great deal of practical and artistic work. This enables the pupils to grow in confidence, initiative and imagination.
There are two main classroom blocks, other buildings for specialised activities and craft, including well-equipped laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and a Library.
The extensive school grounds border on Ashdown Forest. There are two lakes, a swimming pool, several sports fields and tennis courts.
The school theatre seats more than 400 for the numerous musical and dramatic performances. The 18th Century Mansion hosts more intimate events as well as housing the Music Department. Boarding is available in the school's hostel and in teachers' or parents' homes.
